How do you describe yourself?

We asked our participants to tell us which group term described them, and which term they thought each of their parents would use to describe themselves.

To explore the results, select a term below, perhaps beginning with the one you would use to describe yourself. Then, see how participants who used that term think their parents would have responded. Some participants thought one or both parents would use the same terms they did, but many did not.

Sometimes children used the same terms to describe themselves and their parents. Other times, they used different terms. The results suggest that the terms people use to describe themselves, even within a family, can change in the span of a single generation.
